A fire that destroyed a mobile home on Ken Karyl Avenue Wednesday could have been much worse after five children escaped the home unharmed, Vicksburg Fire Chief Derrick Stamps said.

“At approximately 4:19 p.m., the Vicksburg Fire Department received an urgent call and swiftly responded to 2612 Ken Karl Avenue, where a house fire was reported with the alarming potential of someone being trapped inside,” Stamps said. “Upon arrival, the firefighters discovered that all occupants – five in total aging around 16 to three – had successfully escaped the mobile home. Still, the scene was chaotic as flames roared and engulfed the structure, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky.”

Stamps said firefighters were able to quickly control the blaze and keep the flames from spreading to surrounding homes.

“Fire crews quickly assessed the situation and launched an aggressive exterior attack on the fire. They navigated around a hazardous downed power line, adding an extra risk layer as they worked diligently to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby properties. Their determined efforts were crucial in extinguishing the fire and ensuring the safety of the surrounding area.”

Stamps said the home was a total loss and an official cause of the fire remains under investigation.
