Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs Jr. on Monday officially announced he has submitted the necessary paperwork to qualify for re-election in June’s municipal race and is seeking his fourth term in office.
“(Mayor Flaggs is) seeking another term to continue his work in advancing the City of Vicksburg,” Flaggs’ office said in statement.
“Serving as mayor of Vicksburg has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Flaggs said. “Together, we’ve made significant strides, but there is still much work to be done. I am running for reelection to ensure we continue the momentum and address the challenges facing our community with determination and purpose.”
Flaggs said his top priorities for a fourth term include:
-
Enhancing Public Safety: Strengthening partnerships with law enforcement, investing in technology and training, and fostering community engagement to ensure a safer Vicksburg for all.
-
Addressing Blight: Continuing efforts to eliminate abandoned and dilapidated properties, revitalizing neighborhoods, and promoting economic development in underutilized areas, with an emphasis on more rigorous code enforcement to protect public health and community well-being.
-
Improving Housing Opportunity: Expanding access to affordable housing, partnering with developers, and supporting programs that provide safe and quality homes for families.
-
Investing in Infrastructure and Completing the Port Project: Upgrading roads, bridges, and water systems to support growth and improve daily life for residents and businesses, while finalizing the development of the port to boost economic growth, create jobs, and position Vicksburg as a regional hub for commerce.
-
Reorganizing Parks and Recreation: Enhancing recreational facilities and programs to promote healthy lifestyles and provide opportunities for youth and families to thrive, including the completion of Golding Park.
“These priorities reflect the needs and aspirations of our community,” he said. “I am committed to ensuring that Vicksburg remains a city of opportunity, resilience, and progress.”
“Throughout his tenure, Mayor Flaggs has worked diligently to bring in external resources and support for city initiatives,” his office said. “He plans to continue to vigorously seek state and federal grants to ensure these goals are met effectively and sustainably. The mayor invites residents to join his campaign and share their ideas for the future of Vicksburg.”
“This is not just about re-electing a mayor; it’s about continuing a partnership with the people of Vicksburg to achieve our shared vision for this great city,” Flaggs said.
