I love Vicksburg for many reasons. Why do you?

“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.”

This first line of Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s “Sonnet 43” may have you thinking I am about to take a deep dive into Valentine’s Day, but it is still a little over two weeks before Cupid starts shooting off his arrows.

I just thought this would be a catchy way to get all of you thinking about Vicksburg. That’s right, the River City.

This year marks Vicksburg’s bicentennial and to join in the celebration, we are focusing our Profile magazine — not to be confused with our Vicksburg Living magazine, which by the way, the January/February wedding edition is now available — on Vicksburg becoming incorporated 200 years ago.

Profile, as we refer to it at The Post, is done annually and it is always themed. This year, it was kind of a no-brainer. Since it’s our bicentennial, we are going with 200 Things We Love About Vicksburg.

Obviously, we are not going to write 200 stories. I would probably have to take a leave of absence if that were the case. But seriously, we will be doing a smattering of stories that focus on Vicksburg. But, to get us to our 200, we will also have short little snippets.

And we need your help. While I think all of us in the newsroom are terribly smart — especially Ernest — please don’t leave it up to just us to come up with the 200 things to love about Vicksburg. Because there may be something very important that we could overlook that needs to be included.

And if you feel you are just not sure what we could include in the 200 things to love about Vicksburg, I have written down a few of my favorites and also included why they are favorites.

For those who may be questioning how to write or describe a favorite thing about Vicksburg, don’t hesitate to reach out. I will be happy to help, as will others in the newsroom.

You can email me at terri.frazier@vicksburgpost.com; our editor Blake Bell at blake.bell@vicksburgpost.com; or drop us a line through our Facebook page.

So here goes: some of my favorite things I love about Vicksburg.

I love Vicksburg because of its hills. As a little girl, it was so fun riding a bike down a steep hill. Not only did I get to feel the wind in my face, but I also experienced the thrill of speed.

I love Vicksburg because it sits alongside the Mississippi River. It never seems to get old to ride down to the Vicksburg waterfront and see a big boat. At times there were paddle-wheelers with calliopes docked along the bank.

I love Vicksburg because we are a town that celebrates the arts. We have three art galleries, two theater groups, dance studios, and our schools promote all forms of music, be it band or choir.

I love Vicksburg because of the beautiful downtown steeples. The Church of the Holy Trinity’s steeple looks like an owl, it you look at it from a certain angle.

I love Vicksburg because of all its old homes. Although many of the homes have been renovated to allow for modern conveniences, they are still a window into the past.

I honestly could go on and on, but it will also be fun to hear from others. So tell us why you love Vicksburg.

“From staying informed with local governmental issues to hearing the stories of its people, a hometown newspaper is vital to a community. I have felt privileged to be part of a dedicated team at The Post throughout my tenure and hope that with theirs and with local support, I will be able to continue to grow and hone in on my skills as I help share the stories in Vicksburg. When asked what I like most about my job, my answer is always ‘the people.’
