For the 64th year, the women of St. George’s Antiochian Orthodox Church will host a fundraising dinner featuring Lebanese food. This year, the dinner will take place Monday, Feb. 3. A lunch serving will take place from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. and a supper serving will take place from 4 until 6 p.m.
The traditional dinner will feature kibbee, cabbage rolls, green beans, tabouleh and pita bread. For an extra $20, boxes of baklava and boxes of assorted Lebanese cookies will be available for sale.
Rhonda Wright, church member and chair of the dinner, said kibbe – one of the dinner’s more popular items – is a Lebanese dish made of lean, finely ground beef, cracked wheat that is soaked, grated onions and spices. Making the cabbage rolls is quite a process, she said. It begins with steaming the cabbage, filling the leaves with a mixture of rice and meat, rolling them up and soaking them in water and lemon juice before cooking. Tabouleh is a traditional Lebanese salad, and although the ingredients can vary, Wright said it will usually contain tomatoes, oil and lemon juice and lettuce or parsley. The green beans included with the meal are cooked in a Lebanese style and contain tomatoes and tomato sauce.
Some of the funds from the sale this year will be used to reinforce structural issues in the church sanctuary.
Tickets can be purchased at the event. Both dine-in and take-out are available. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased from St. George’s church members or at Antwine Accounting, Wright said.
“If you’re not eating in, just stay in your car,” Wright said. “You can purchase tickets and receive your take-out meals at the same time.”
The take-out line will be located on the south side of the church and directed by the Warren County Sheriff’s Office.
