Warren Central’s tennis team got ready for the upcoming season by putting in a good showing at a preseason event Saturday.
The Viking Blue team won all three of its matches at the HS City Classic Tourney in Brandon. Viking Blue beat Northeast Jones 3-2; Clinton Red 4-1; and Bayou Academy Black 3-2.
Although it won all three matches, Viking Blue did not win its flight because the winner was determined by the total number of games won. Clinton Red edged out Viking Blue in that category, 152-148.
Viking Blue shuffled its players around the lineup, with most playing a combination of the singles and doubles events.
Samuel Harris and Sydney Sullivan both won all three of their individual matches. Harris won twice in boys’ singles, and teamed with Brady Taylor for a 6-4, 5-6, 1-0 victory over Northeast Jones in boys’ doubles.
Sullivan and Lillian Feibelman romped to two straight-set victories in girls’ doubles, 6-1, 6-2 against Northeast Jones and 6-2, 6-3 over Bayou Academy Black.
Sullivan also teamed with Taylor for mixed doubles and beat Clinton Red’s squad 6-5, 6-4.
Also competing for Viking Blue were Avery Hern, Charles Harris, Ivan Ozherelev, Laura Bailey and Amelia King.
Warren Central will begin its high school tennis season Thursday at 4 p.m., with a match against St. Andrew’s on its home court at Halls Ferry Park. It will also play a road match against Florence on Friday.
