PCA’s basketball season ends with losses in Class 3A South State tournament

Porter’s Chapel Academy started off fast, then hit a speed bump that ended its season.

The Eagles only scored four points in the second quarter, which allowed a competitive game to quickly spiral out of control, and lost 60-32 to Lamar Christian in the first round of the MAIS Class 3A South State boys basketball tournament on Wednesday.

Porter’s Chapel only trailed 12-8 at the end of the first quarter, then went cold in the second. Six players scored for Lamar Christian in the period, as it outscored PCA 23-4 to open a 35-12 lead by halftime.

Porter’s Chapel slowed down Newton Academy in the Class 3A girls’ South State tournament, but couldn’t get out of first gear itself and was eliminated with a first-round loss.

PCA (5-10) only made two field goals in the first half — a basket by Sophie Masterson in the first quarter and a 3-pointer by Marley Bufkin in the second. That helped Newton creep out to a 22-7 halftime lead that didn’t dip in the second half.

PCA finished 4-for-33 (12.1 percent) shooting from the field. Bufkin led the Lady Eagles with 10 points — half of them from the foul line — while Masterson had five points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.

Newton Academy advanced to the semifinals to face River Oaks on Friday.
