Missy Gators finish second in Region 2-6A basketball tournament

The Vicksburg Missy Gators came up a little short in their quest for a region championship, but did move up in the state tournament pecking order.

Callaway opened a 10-point lead by the end of the first quarter, then pulled away in the second half to beat Vicksburg 61-38 on Friday in the MHSAA Region 2-6A girls basketball tournament championship game.

Zion Harvey led Vicksburg (17-12) with 19 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Cynia Johnson had six points and 10 rebounds, but no other Missy Gator scored more than four points.

Harvey and Johnson were both selected to the all-tournament team. Vicksburg’s Ja’Quez Jones made the boys’ all-tournament team.

Callaway (26-3) earned the No. 1 seed from Region 2-6A for the Class 6A state tournament.

Vicksburg will be the No. 2 seed, after finishing third in Region 2-6A in the regular season, and will host Center Hill in a first-round game on Friday, Feb. 14. The time of the game has not yet been set.
