Alcorn State lays historic beatdown on Mississippi Valley State

LORMAN — Alcorn State’s victory over Mississippi Valley State started out lopsided and wound up historic.
Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt scored 14 points and Djahi Binet had eight points and 10 rebounds as Alcorn crushed its in-state rival Valley 86-39 on Monday.
The 47-point margin of victory was the largest ever in the series since at least the 1966-67 season, when game-by-game records are first available. The previous record was a 44-point, 119-75 Alcorn win in the 1970-71 season.
Valley lost for the second game in a row, and ninth time this season, by at least 40 points.
Donovan Sanders scored 10 points for Mississippi Valley State (3-21, 1-10 Southwestern Athletic Conference). The Delta Devils were 4-for-22 from the field in the first half and only scored five points in the the first 11 minutes. Alcorn led 44-16 at halftime.
Twelve of the 13 players who got on the floor for Alcorn (7-17, 7-4) scored. Michael Pajeaud and Daniel Braster had 13 points apiece and Marcus Tankersley finished with 11.
Former Vicksburg High star Davian Williams started and finished with eight points, four steals, two rebounds and two assists. His high school teammate Cameron Butler had two points, one steal, one assist and one rebound in 12 minutes of action.
The Braves shot 54.2 percent (32-for-59) from the field overall, and were 16-for-24 from the free throw line.
Alcorn won its third game in a row. It will head to Florida for its next two, Saturday in Daytona Beach against Bethune-Cookman and Feb. 17 in Tallahassee vs. Florida A&M.
