“Don’t Stifle God’s Holy Spirit,” Gipsy Smith warned. • Betty Compton and Theodore Roberts appeared in “Locked Doors” at the Alamo Theater.

90 YEARS AGO: 1935

Mrs. J.C. Templeton of Utica won the dot contest staged by the Rice Furniture Company. • A.L. Hoxie donated a steer to the emergency food department. 

80 YEARS AGO: 1945

Stephen A. Russell arrived at Great Lakes, Illinois for Navy training. • John Raworth was re-elected president of the Vicksburg YMCA.

70 YEARS AGO: 1955

Mrs. Anna Penley died. • Services were held for Leroy Barr. 

60 YEARS AGO: 1965

Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Marshall announced the birth of a daughter, Debbie.

50 YEARS AGO: 1975

Mr. and Mrs. Gen. McCowan observed their 60th wedding anniversary. • Dr. Andrew William Harrell returned to Virginia after visiting relatives in Warren County. 

40 YEARS AGO: 1985

Mrs. Almedia Strickland, mother of Marilyn Brewer, died at the age of 86. 

30 YEARS AGO: 1995

Louisiana Tech art professor Robert J. Berguson spoke at the meeting of the Vicksburg Art Association.

20 YEARS AGO: 2005

Emilee Booth, Bern Eberson, Ellen Wakely and Tiffany Tiwari were named National Merit Finalists. 

10 YEARS AGO: 2015

About 55 acres of the City of Vicksburg’s 200-acre Fisher Ferry property was deemed usable for recreation, creating issues among local leaders.
