NEW ORLEANS — Kellen Moore led one team to a Super Bowl championship in the Superdome. The stadium’s primary tenant is hoping he can do the same for them.
The New Orleans Saints announced Tuesday that they have agreed to a deal to make Moore their next head coach.
Moore spent this season as the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive coordinator. He’ll make the move to the Saints just two days after he helped the Eagles to a 40-22 win over Kansas City in Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.
Before his time with the Eagles, Moore played quarterback for six seasons with the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys. The 36-year-old has been a coach in the NFL since 2018, with stints as the offensive coordinator for the Cowboys, the Los Angeles Chargers and the Eagles.
The 2024 Eagles set a franchise record with 3,048 rushing yards and finished second in the NFL in rushing yards per game (179.3). They were only the second team in NFL history to rush for 3,000-plus yards and at least 25 (29) touchdowns.
“I am excited to join the New Orleans Saints and deeply appreciate the faith that Mrs. Benson and the entire Saints organization have placed in me,” Moore said in a statement. “I look forward to embracing the challenges ahead and am eager to get started. I would also like to thank the Philadelphia Eagles for an incredible 2024 season. I’m excited to begin this new chapter.”
Moore will take over a Saints team that has struggled to find its footing since longtime quarterback Drew Brees retired in 2020. The Saints are 30-38 since then and finished 5-12 in 2024. Head coach Dennis Allen was fired midway through last season and special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi led them to a 3-5 record over the last eight games.
The Saints hold the No. 9 overall pick in this year’s draft, and seven picks in later rounds.
“At the start of the interview process, it was important to find a head coach who was the right fit for the New Orleans Saints organization,” Saints owner Gayle Benson said in a statement announcing the hire. “Through the search process, it became clear that Kellen is the right person to help us re-establish a winning program and culture that our fans are accustomed to and have come to expect. I would also like to thank Darren Rizzi for his service as interim coach and leading our team this past season. I am truly grateful to him.”
