HATTIESBURG — Joey Urban collected three hits, including a solo home run, and four Southern Miss pitchers limited Mississippi State to four hits as the Golden Eagles registered a 3-0 victory over their-in state rival on Tuesday night.
The Golden Eagles are 5-0 for the first time since 2016.
The fifth-largest crowd ever at Pete Taylor Park, 5,741 fans, saw the Golden Eagles jump out to a 1-0 lead without the benefit of a hit in the first inning.
Both Ben Higdon and Ozzie Pratt walked and moved to second and third on a ground out. Higdon then scored on a passed ball for the 1-0 lead.
Southern Miss completed its scoring an inning later. With one out, Urban homered off the scoreboard in left-center field, before Higdon reached via a fielding error. Higdon then tried to steal second and scored on a throwing error.
Urban also doubled and singled in the contest as he had three of the Golden Eagles’ four hits.
Starting pitcher Colby Allen had five strikeouts in four innings for Southern Miss. Cal Culpepper and Josh Och worked two innings each, and Landen Payne the ninth. The four pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts and only walked one batter.
Mississippi State used five pitchers for the midweek game. Starter Charlie Foster worked the first two innings and took the loss. Ben Davis had four strikeouts in three innings out of the bullpen.
