Vicksburg native Shane Lewis, USM’s Adams named Sun Belt baseball Players of the Week

Shane Lewis was ice cold for most of 2024, but he started this season on fire.

The Troy outfielder and former Warren Central star was named the Sun Belt Conference baseball Player of the Week after leading Troy to a season-opening three-game sweep of Bellarmine last weekend.

Lewis went 4-for-7 with three home runs, one double, six walks, five RBIs and five runs scored as Troy outscored Bellarmine 37-12 in the series. He reached base in 11 of his 13 plate appearances 11.

Lewis hit his first home run of the season in a 7-3 win on Feb. 15, then went deep twice as the Trojans won 7-3 again in the finale on Feb. 16.

It was a welcome start to the season for Lewis after a disappointing 2024 campaign. The senior set Troy’s single-season home run record with 27 and was the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year in 2023. Last year he battled injuries and only hit .176 with five home runs in 32 games.

Troy played at Auburn on Tuesday, and will host Northwestern State in a three-game series Feb. 21-23.

The Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week was Southern Miss’ Matthew Adams.

The right-hander made his first appearance since June 2023 and threw six scoreless innings in an 18-4 victory over Lafayette on Feb. 15. He had nine strikeouts while scattering three hits and a walk.

Adams struck out at least one batter in five of his six innings and — after allowing a leadoff double in the sixth — struck out the side to close out his 2025 debut. None of the four Lafayette batters who reached base against Adams got past second.

Southern Miss was set to host Mississippi State Tuesday at 6 p.m., and then will play a three-game series against Louisiana Tech at Pete Taylor Park beginning Friday. Game times are 6 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday, weather permitting.
