A Warren County man is facing charges with both the Vicksburg Police Department (VPD) and the Warren County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) after an early morning traffic stop Thursday uncovered drugs and eventually weapons.

Vicksburg Chief of Police Penny Jones said a VPD narcotics investigator initiated a traffic stop for speeding Thursday just after 5 a.m. on Highway 61 North and smelled the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle being driven by Robert Lee Hunt Sr.

“A probable cause search was conducted, leading to the discovery of a felony quantity of schedule II pills and additional marijuana inside the vehicle,” Jones said.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said the traffic stop was enough to prompt a search warrant to be issued for Hunt’s home at 10 Woodland Hills Drive by Warren County Justice Court Judge James Jefferson.

“We recovered over one pound of marijuana in small bags ready for sale, as well as other items indicative of the sale of marijuana,” Pace said. “We also recovered an AR-15 assault rifle and a 9mm handgun.”

Pace said Hunt is a convicted felon and was charged by WCSO with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Hunt received a $20,000 bond in front of Jefferson. He was also charged with possession of schedule II narcotics, possession of marijuana inside a motor vehicle and speeding by VPD. Hunt also made an initial appearance in Vicksburg Municipal Court in front of Judge Angela Carpenter, who also set bond at $20,000 and bound him over to the Warren County grand jury.

Jones said the arrest is part of an ongoing investigation.

Pace said the investigation is evidence of the teamwork between WCSO and VPD that often leads to arrests and charges.

“Vicksburg Police Department and the Warren County Sheriff’s Office narcotics investigators continue to work together to rid our community of those who would profit from the sale of illegal narcotics,” he said.
