- Vicksburg High baseball player Kaleb Doss was 2-for-4 with three RBIs in an 18-17 victory over Yazoo City on Saturday.
The Vicksburg Gators were up, down, and all around on Saturday but somehow finished on top.
Peyton Calvin delivered a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning that gave the Gators a wild 18-17 baseball victory over Yazoo City.
Vicksburg (3-3) blew separate leads of seven and four runs, then rallied to tie it in the bottom of the seventh inning and win it in the eighth.
The teams combined for 20 hits, 23 walks, and 18 hit batters.
Kaleb Doss was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Gators. Abel Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Kolten Thomas reached base four times and scored three runs, and Jacobie Simpson also scored three runs.
VHS pitcher Nick Carson had eight strikeouts in five innings. He also went 1-for-4 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored at the plate.
Jeremarione Tate was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored for Yazoo City. Anthony Ingram Jr. and Melvin Robinson also scored three runs apiece.
Vicksburg jumped out to a 12-5 lead after two innings, but Yazoo City tied scored in each of the first seven innings and tied it by the top of the fourth.
Vicksburg scored four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead 16-12, only to let Yazoo City come back again and eventually take a 17-16 lead. Demond Collum was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh to put the Indians in front.
Vicksburg’s Ashton Harris singled and scored on a passed ball to tie it again in the bottom of the seventh, and then the Gators finally held serve in the top of the eighth.
Two walks and a passed ball set up Calvin to deliver the game winning single to center field for the Gators. It was Calvin’s only hit in six at-bats.
Vicksburg will play three road games next week — Tuesday, Feb. 25 at Brookhaven; Thursday, Feb. 27 at Terry; and Friday, Feb. 28 at Starkville. All three varsity games will begin at 7 p.m.
