Mississippi Basketball Roundup: JSU bests rival Alcorn; Mississippi State and Ole Miss take road losses

JACKSON — Jackson State picked up rivalry bragging rights and a spot in the SWAC men’s basketball standings on Saturday.
Shannon Grant had a perfect shooting day — 11-for-11 from the field and 3-for-3 at the free throw line — to finish with 25 points, and Jackson State defeated Alcorn State 71-63.
Daeshun Ruffin had 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists for JSU. Keiveon Hunt added 16 points, while Romelle Mansell chipped in eight points, nine rebounds, four assists and four blocks.
The Tigers (10-17, 10-4 SWAC) moved into sole possession of second place in the conference standings. They shot 54.9 percent from the field and were 11-for-13 at the foul line.
JSU led 35-21 at halftime. Alcorn went on a 13-2 run to get as close as two points, at 59-57, on two free throws by former Vicksburg High star Davian Williams with 4:10 left in the game, but couldn’t get closer.
Williams finished with three points and six rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench for Alcorn (8-19, 8-6). Marcus Tankersley led the Braves with 18 points.
Oklahoma 93, Mississippi State 87
Jeremiah Fears totaled 27 points and 10 assists, and Sam Godwin had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds as Oklahoma (17-10, 4-10 Southeastern Conference) outran No. 21 Mississippi State (19-8, 7-7).
Oklahoma trailed 37-34 at halftime, then shot 68 percent from the field (17-for-25) in the second half.
Josh Hubbard led Mississippi State with 19 points and five assists. RJ Melendez finished with nine points and 10 rebounds, and Riley Kugel scored 11 points.
The Bulldogs were coming off back-to-back wins over ranked opponents Ole Miss and Texas A&M, but took a tough loss on the road against one that has struggled in its inaugural SEC season. Another difficult road test is ahead, at No. 4 Alabama on Tuesday (8 p.m., ESPN2).
Vanderbilt 77, Ole Miss 72
Chris Manon hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 4:53 remaining, and it ignited a 10-2 run that propelled Vanderbilt (18-9, 6-8 SEC) past No. 24 Ole Miss (19-8, 8-6) in Nashville.
Ole Miss erased a 19-point deficit in the first half and led 64-63 until two free throws by Jason Edwards and Manon’s 3-pointer put Vanderbilt ahead for good. The Commodores were 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the last two minutes.
Manon finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and three blocks, while Edwards added 15 points for Vanderbilt.
Malik Dia had 22 points and seven rebounds for Ole Miss, and Sean Padulla finished with 21 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Ole Miss will stay on the road to face No. 1 Auburn Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 6 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
Alabama State 79, Mississippi Valley State 56
Antonio Madlock and CJ Hines scored 13 points apiece, and Alabama State (12-14, 8-5 SWAC) had no trouble beating Mississippi Valley State (3-23, 1-12).
Alabama State shot 53.1 percent from the field overall and made nine 3-pointers in the first half as it built a 46-30 lead at halftime.
Moses Horne was Valley’s high scorer with 12 points. Jair Horton totaled nine points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
Eighteen of the Delta Devils’ 23 losses have been by 20 points or more.
