Warren Central tops Germantown in Mid-Mississippi Classic finale

After losing two close games at the Mid-Mississippi Classic, Warren Central finally wound up on the right side of one.

The Vikings scored three runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth to surge past Germantown and win 6-4 on Saturday in their final game at the annual early-season baseball tournament.

Jacob Kealhofer singled in two runs in the fifth inning to put the Vikings ahead 4-2. In the sixth, Blake Caruthers delivered an RBI triple and scored on Tristan Jamison’s single to make it 6-3.

Germantown got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Dylan Everett, and had a runner on in the seventh, but neither got into scoring position.

Caruthers led Warren Central (2-2) at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one RBI and three runs scored. Jamiston was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored, and Kealhofer had two hits and two RBIs.

Beau Bradley pitched 4 1/3 innings to earn the win. He allowed three runs, only one earned, struck out six batters and walked one.

The victory was a welcome finish to the weekend for Warren Central, after it lost its first two games in the Mid-Mississippi Classic by one run each. The Vikings lost 4-3 to Hillcrest, Ala., on Friday night, and 3-2 to Faith Academy (Ala.) earlier Saturday.

Faith Academy earned a walk-off win when Carlos Ortiz hit an RBI squeeze bunt single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

hayes Loper was 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored against Faith Academy, and Kealhofer doubled and scored a run.

Warren Central will play pair of top-tier MAIS opponents next week. Reigning MAIS Class 6A champion Jackson Prep visits Viking Field Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. Then on Friday, Feb. 28, Warren Central goes to Flowood to face Hartfield Academy at 7 p.m.
