Catching fire with technology

Some of you may have heard the Alicia Keys song, “Girl on Fire,” the meaning of which suggests that a girl is looking pretty spectacular as she heads out for the evening.

I am certainly a far cry from looking “hot” for any occasion; however, I am feeling like I have been on fire this week when it comes to my computer skills.

You all have heard me lament over and over about my lack of ability when it comes to technology, but this week — with a little assistance from baby girl and my patient publisher — I have crossed over the Rubicon and have successfully posted to The Vicksburg Post website, and I have revived our Vicksburg Living Facebook page. On Facebook, I even added some photos to the page.

This major social media feat has not only boosted my ego, but it has also solidified what my human physiology teacher Mrs. Kinser used to say to her students who liked to doddle: There is no time to waste until you know everything.

Well, not that I don’t enjoy doddling every now and again; it sure was heartening to know I still had some active brain cells that allowed me to learn something new.

And while I would love to continue bragging about my newfound skills, I would rather pivot just a bit and focus more, not on what I did, but why I did it.

For months, or maybe longer, I have wanted to be able to share with readers the stories that are published in the Vicksburg Living magazine. We have done this in the past with the help from the higher-ups, but with their ever-growing workload, it had just come time for me to take control. Well, maybe control is not the right word — in charge may be a better way of saying it — but either way, my aim is to help expand our readership and advertising market, all while highlighting my hometown.

And I’m also hoping to expand my newfound knowledge of social media to include posting and linking up with other entities in Vicksburg with the goal of reaching as many folks as possible.

The more we showcase our history, our people and all the fun and exciting things to do here, the more folks will want to come here. Don’t you agree?

So, for any of you who would like to support the effort, please like and share our Facebook page.
