The Vicksburg Fire Department Dive Team on Monday recovered the bodies of two dogs that drowned after a vehicle was submerged in a lake at Openwood Plantation.
Vicksburg Fire Chief Derrick Stamps said the divers made the discovery while helping a wrecker service retrieve the car following an accident Sunday night.
“On the morning of Monday, February 24, 2025, the Vicksburg Fire Department Dive Team was deployed to recover a vehicle that had submerged in a lake at Openwood Plantation the previous day,” Stamps said. “As the dive crew expertly worked to secure a line for the vehicle’s removal, they encountered a heartbreaking revelation: Two dogs had tragically drowned inside the car.”
Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said the vehicle became submerged after the driver, while parked in a driveway on a private road, accidentally drove into the lake while seemingly suffering a medical event Sunday night.
Pace said the driver was able to escape unharmed, but not physically able to also retrieve the two animals.
Pace said an investigation is ongoing, although no foul play is suspected.
