In celebration of the season of Mardi Gras, the 13th annual Carnaval de Mardi Gras and Gumbo Cook-Off, sponsored by the Vicksburg Foundation for Historic Preservation, will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center, 1302 Adams St.
Admission for the Carnaval and Gumbo Cook-off is $10, which includes gumbo and $5 for children.
The teams competing in the competition will be lined up along Crawford Street in front of the cultural center with hopes of becoming either the winner in the seafood or non-seafood category. Each winner will be awarded a $300 cash prize along with a trophy and the coveted bragging rights.
In addition to the cook-off, there will be children’s activities and live music by Keys Vs Strings. Additional food items and beverages may be purchased during the event.
Tickets will be available at the cook-off or in advance at the Biedenharn Coca-Cola Museum. All proceeds from the Carnaval will benefit the Vicksburg Foundation for Historic Preservation. For more information about the event, call 601-636-5010 or visit www.facebook.com/vicksburg.mardi.gras.
