John Earl Wallace Jr. was sentenced to 40 years for murder Tuesday, with 30 to serve. Wallace entered a guilty plea in front of Judge M. James Chaney in connection with the murder of Preston Wilson Jr. in 2023. Wallace also agreed to testify against his co-defendant Perrion Johnson.
Co-defendant Zackary Bryant also pleaded guilty to accessory to murder and received a suspended sentence with the condition that he testify in Johnson’s upcoming trial.
Assistant District Attorney Michael Warren recommended the sentences on behalf of the state.
Police were called to the scene at the corner of Cherry and Harris streets in July 2023, where they found Wilson dead from a gunshot wound. Vicksburg Police Chief Penny Jones said the shooting stemmed from a previous disagreement. Four individuals, including Wilson, were targeted in the shooting, according to investigators. The three other targeted individuals were not injured.
In October 2024, Bryant, Johnson, Patrick Jacobe Ross and Wallace were each indicted for one count of murder, drive-by shooting and shooting into a building. They also faced three counts each for aggravated assault. Bryant was also charged with possession of a weapon after a felony conviction. According to the indictment, Bryant has a previous conviction for possession of a weapon after felony conviction in 2016.
A trial date for Johnson is set for the March 10-21 term. He has until Friday to enter into a plea arrangement.
