The Run Thru History added another chapter to its legend Saturday, as Vicksburg’s iconic running event celebrated its 46th edition.

More than 500 people participated in the 10-kilometer run, 5K race walk and children’s 1-mile fun run in the Vicksburg National Military Park. The postrace party included refreshments, beer for adults, and music from Vicksburg band The Chill.

Runners and walkers received Mardi Gras beads in addition to the traditional cannon trophies given to the top finishers in each age group.

The beads were part of a Mardi Gras twist for the 2025 race, since the holiday is being celebrated across the Gulf Coast this weekend. A Mardi Gras parade was scheduled in downtown Vicksburg Saturday afternoon, and a gumbo cook-off was set to be held at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center in the evening.

Jack Kelley, a 17-year-old from West Monroe, Louisiana, won the Run Thru History’s overall championship in the 10K run. He had a time of 36:16, which was two minutes ahead of runner-up Isaac Childs of Jackson.

Elisabeth Gaillet, a 29-year-old from Ridgeland, won the women’s championship in 45:37. She finished 13th overall.

Two Vicksburg residents, Ron Roma and Terrie Foster, finished first and second, respectively, and won the men’s and women’s 5K race walk championship.

The 71-year-old Roma had a time of 32:23 to win the overall title after finishing second each of the last two years. He was just five seconds ahead of Foster, 39, who won the women’s championship for the first time.

The children’s Cannonball 1-miler wrapped up the day’s running events. Vicksburg resident Abram Rice won the overall title by beating Jack Dornbusch in a sprint to the line, and 11-year-old Maggie Winters won the girls’ championship.
