Flashes win five events in season-opening track meet

- St. Aloysius distance runner Samantha Edwards won the girls' 1,600 and 3,200 meters at the season-opening PCS Invitational on Saturday.
St. Aloysius had a solid start to its 2025 high school track and field season.
St. Al won five events and had a dozen top-three finishes Saturday at the PCS Invitational in Hattiesburg.
Samantha Edwards was a double winner for the Flashes in the girls’ distance running events. The senior won the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:33.28, and the 3,200 meters in 11:57.18.
Julia Moberley won the discus with a throw of 85 feet, 2 inches, and also placed fifth in the shot put. Anslee Averett registered a third-place finish in the 300 meter hurdles.
St. Al only had a handful of athletes competing in the high school division, but did well in the junior high meet.
Kelci Bingham won the girls’ 200 meters in 29.29 seconds and finished second in the 100 meters with a time of 14.44 seconds. Scarlett Coutch won the discus with a throw of 64-9.
In the boys’ junior high division, Dru Gleese and Sam Ashley each had one second and one third-place finish.
Gleese was second in the long jump, with a mark of 17-2, and third in the 200 meters with a time of 26.94 seconds. Ashley placed second in the 400 meters with a time of 58.35 seconds and third in the triple jump with a mark of 31-11.
John Hossley added a second-place finish in the 800 meters, with a time of 2:36.25.
St. Al will be back on the track Thursday at the Centreville Academy meet.
