Warren Central’s girls’ track team is 2-for-2.
The Lady Vikes won five of 16 events against a deep field, and piled up enough points further down the line to take the team title at the VHS Gator Invitational Wednesday at Memorial Stadium.
Warren Central totaled 150 points to win for the second time in as many meets this season. Northwest Rankin was second, with 117.33 points, Ouachita Parish was third with 86, and meet host Vicksburg High fourth with 80. Nine teams competed in the meet.
Warren Central had 13 top-three finishes on an afternoon when steady winds around 20 mph made running and jumping into it very difficult.
“In almost every event, at least one point was contributed. So everybody tried to give something,” Warren Central coach Heather Casey said. “‘Fight the wind and finish’ was all I kept saying today.”
Arrionna Jenkins led the Lady Vikes’ effort by winning both the shot put and discus with throws of 36 feet, 10 inches and 105-7, respectively. Marissa Stewart placed second in the discus and third in the shot put.
Ka’ryn Henderson contributed another field event win with a mark of 4-10 in the high jump. She beat her teammate Madison Ward on a tiebreaker.
The Lady Vikes’ other victories were in the 4×100 and 4×200 meter relays. Henderson, Adria Burrell, Za’Mya Malone and Arielle Ward were on both relays.
For Vicksburg, Amiya Hall and Zion Knox both snagged first and second-place finishes in individual events.
Hall won the 200 meters with a time of 25.86 seconds, and was second in the 100 meters in 13.07 seconds.
Knox won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 9.75 inches. She was second in the 300 meter hurdles in 53.84 seconds, and second in the triple jump at 36 feet, 1 inch.
The Missy Gators’ only other podium finishes were Jamiya Stewart in the discus, with a mark of 68 feet; and Nakia Jeffers with a mark of 17 feet, 7.25 inches in the long jump. Stewart was third in her event and Jeffers was second.
In the boys’ meet, Northwest Rankin totaled 134.5 points to take the team title. Ouachita Parish was second, with 110; Warren Central third with 89.8; Meridian fourth with 81.10; and Vicksburg High fifth with 62.
Warren Central had seven top-three finishes, with wins by Dwight Palmer in the 200 meters (22.27 seconds) and Chester Savage in the 300 meter hurdles (43.85 seconds). Palmer also finished third in the 100 meters, with a time of 11.61 seconds.
Anthony Streif finished second in the 3,200 meters, Rickey Neal Jr. was second in the long jump at 20 feet even, and Gavin Davenport second in the discus with a throw of 128 feet, 1 inch.
The Vikings’ 4×200 meter relay team of Palmer, Savage, Landon Green and Mike Hall also placed second, with a time of 1:31.98.
Vicksburg’s Jayden Woods had a good day in the field events. He won the discus with a throw of 129-7, and was third in the shot put with a mark of 42-11.
Marlon Foy finished third in the 300 meter hurdles, and Casey Brown had a pair of thirds in the 800 and 1,600 meter runs.
Vicksburg’s next meet is April 4, at Madison Central for the Jaguar Invitational.
Warren Central will compete again on March 18 at the JPS High School Meet 2 at Hughes Field in Jackson. It will also be at the 2025 Maverick Invitational at Germantown High School on March 20.
