Baseball Roundup: Porter’s Chapel, Port Gibson get run-rule wins

- Porter's Chapel Academy baseball player Chad Fuson had 13 strikeouts in five innings pitched, and also went 1-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored at the plate as PCA beat Hillcrest Christian 16-6 on Thursday.
Porter’s Chapel Academy finally got to enjoy a bright spot in what’s shaped up as a difficult baseball season.
Chad Fuson racked up 13 strikeouts in five innings pitched, and also went 1-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored at the plate as PCA earned a 16-6 run-rule victory over Hillcrest Christian on Thursday.
PCA (1-9, 1-0 MAIS District 4-3A) snapped a nine-game losing streak to start the season. It scored in every inning and posted a season-high run total. The Eagles scored a total of 17 runs in their first nine games.
Evan Gordon had two hits, walked twice, and scored two runs for PCA. Hunter Simms and Cameron Potter both drove in one run and scored another, and Landon McCullough was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
Coltin Hancock reached base four times, on three walks and a single, and scored four runs.
PCA will play a home-and-home series with Benton Academy next week, in Yazoo City on March 10 and in Vicksburg on March 11. The junior varsity games will begin at 4 p.m. and the varsity at 6 both days.
Madison Central 8, Warren Central 0
Sanders Ainsworth went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, Addison Jayroe was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and one run scored, and No. 9 Madison Central (8-1) beat Warren Central (2-7).
Madison Central scored four runs in the second inning to take control of the game, then twice each in the fifth and sixth innings to put it away.
Hayes Loper reached base three times for Warren Central on two singles and a walk, and had a stolen base. He had two of the Vikings’ three hits and Trace Hood had the other.
Justin Greer allowed two unearned runs and had five strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings pitched for WC.
Thursday’s game was the first of two in a row for Warren Central against top-10 teams. It will go on the road to play No. 1 Brandon (6-5), the defending MHSAA Class 7A champion, Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Vikings will also head to the Coast for three games next week during spring break.
Prairie View 9, St. Aloysius 5
Bax Young went 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, and Prairie View Academy (7-2) scored in each of the first five innings to beat St. Aloysius (4-6) on Thursday.
St. Al scored three runs in the third inning to cut a six-run deficit in half, but couldn’t keep up with the Spartans.
Will Roberson, Carson Smith and Pierson Smith each had a hit and scored a run for St. Al. Carson Smith also walked twice and had four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings pitched.
The Flashes will take a short trip across the Mississippi River to play Tallulah Academy on Friday. The junior varsity plays at 4 p.m. and the varsity at 6.
Port Gibson 20, Jefferson County 5
Port Gibson quickly erased a five-run deficit by scoring six in the bottom of the first inning, then erupted for 10 more in the second on its way to a run-rule victory over rival Jefferson County.
Kendarion Owens went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored for Port Gibson (5-3), while Centrell Hedrick and Michael Evans both reached base three times and scored twice. Akeem Wells singled, walked twice and scored three runs as well.
Kejaylen Edwards was 2-for-2 with one RBI and three runs scored, and Jabraylin Johnson scored three runs.
All nine players in Port Gibson’s lineup reached base at least once and scored at least one run.
Evans pitched three innings of relief in the run-rule shortened contest. He did not allow a hit, walked one batter, and struck out nine.
Port Gibson will play at Natchez Saturday at 1 p.m.
