Distance and discus are powering the St. Aloysius Lady Flashes early in the 2025 high school track and field season.

Julia Moberley won the girls’ discus for the second meet in a row, and Samantha Edwards swept the three distance running events to lead St. Al to a third-place team finish at the Centreville Invitational on Thursday.

The two seniors accounted for 28 of St. Al’s 47 points and five of its nine top-three finishes. Central Hinds won the team title with 53 points and Amite School Center was second with 50.

Moberley threw the discus 84 feet, 11 inches to add the Centreville Invitational to her victory last weekend at the PCS Invitational in Hattiesburg. She also placed second in the shot put with a throw of 27 feet, 4.25 inches.

Edwards dominated the distance events by winning the 800 meters in 2:35.03, the 1,600 meters in 5:27.53, and the 3,200 meters in 11:49.87

Edwards dropped six seconds off her winning time in the 1,600 meters from the PCS Invitational, and eight seconds in the 3,200 meters. She won the 800 meters by 17 seconds and the 1,600 by 36 seconds over Prentiss Christian’s Mary Beth Smith.

Madelyn Kavanaugh and Annslee Averett also had good days for the Lady Flashes.

Kavanaugh finished second in both the 200 meters (29.78 seconds) and 400 meters (1:09.51), and was fourth in the long jump (12 feet, 10 inches). Averett was second in the 300 meter hurdles (53,52 seconds) and third in the 100 meter hurdles (19.77 seconds).

Kelci Bingham also had a second-place finish in the 100 meters in the junior varsity division, with a time of 14.37 seconds.

St. Al’s only points in the boys’ varsity meet came from Carson Gleese’s fifth-place finishes in the 100 meters and 300 meter hurdles, and a fourth by Beau Brogdon in the 110 meter hurdles.

The Flashes’ JV team did better, with two event victories and a sixth-place finish out of 10 teams.

Dru Gleese and John Hossley finished first and second, respectively, in the JV long jump. Gleese jumped 17 feet, 6.5 inches and Hossley was at 16-8.

Sam Ashley won the 400 meters with a time of 59.56 seconds.

St. Al’s next meet is March 19 at Bayou Academy.
