GREENVILLE, S.C. — Ole Miss’ fourth-quarter comeback — and its bid for a major upset in the Southeastern Conference women’s basketball tournament — came up a few points short.

The Rebels chopped a 14-point deficit to three, then ran out of gas and allowed No. 2 seed Texas to escape with a 70-63 victory in the quarterfinals Friday night.

Ole Miss (20-10) only scored one point in the last 2:26.

Texas (30-2), which is ranked No. 1 in the country despite being the No. 2 seed in the SEC tournament, advanced to the semifinals against Florida or LSU.

Ole Miss had its run in Greenville end, but is still projected as a host for an NCAA Tournament regional.

SEC Player of the Year Madison Booker, a Mississippi native, led Texas with 19 points and seven rebounds. Her free throw with 8:29 put the Longhorns ahead 56-42 and seemingly had them in firm control of the game, but Ole Miss mounted a big comeback over the next five minutes.

Kirsten Deans made two 3-pointers and converted a three-point play to account for nine of the Rebels’ points during an 18-4 run. Madison Scott’s layup with 3:44 to go capped the run and pulled Ole Miss to within 63-60.

Deans finished 5-for-6 from 3-point range and scored a game-high 20 points. Scott had 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

Another basket by Christeen Iwuala with 2:26 left made it 66-62, but the Rebels got no closer. They missed their last four shots from the field and committed two turnovers down the stretch. A free throw by Sira Thienou with 33 seconds left was their only point.
