County citizens complain of ‘illegal dumping’

Warren County residents in the areas of Smith Road and Smith Place are voicing their concerns over what one person called “illegal dumping” along the county roadways.

According to one resident who wished to remain anonymous, the problem has persisted for a long time.

“There have been several complaints regarding illegal dumping on Smith Road (and Smith) Place and nothing seems to be happening in regard to helping this situation,” the resident said. “This situation imposes an environmental safety hazard for citizens that live on this street outside in the county.”

The resident went on to say help is needed at the county level, whether it be from a governmental body, law enforcement or both.

“Several people come and dump trash, waste and other materials and the issue has gotten out of hand. Though the property may belong to someone, it is not right to have these types of conditions around children and/or elderly citizens. The county could at least come, put up signs, send local law enforcement out, or simply condemn the property, because the problem is escalating.”

Warren County Board of Supervisors President Kelle Barfield told The Post that following protocol to have the situation remedied is the best course of action for any resident encountering similar circumstances.

“Nuisance properties is a process under state law,” Barfield said. “Anyone wishing for the board to hold a public meeting on a specific address should contact our county administrator to get on an upcoming working meeting agenda for discussion. Dumping is a violation of state law; thus, a matter for law enforcement.”

Barfield said the board of supervisors received similar information regarding the problem in the area, also from an anonymous resident, which makes it harder, she said, to quickly address the problem.
