Gators surge past Greenville for run-rule victory

- Vicksburg High baseball player Mincer Minor went 3-for-4 with a double, four RBIs and three runs scored in an 18-8 win over Greenville on Saturday.
The Vicksburg Gators started spring break by enjoying some sun, fun and runs.
Mincer Minor went 3-for-4 with a double, four RBIs and three runs scored, and the Gators quickly overcame a five-run deficit to take an 18-8 run-rule victory over Greenville on Saturday.
After falling behind 4-0 in the top of the second inning, and 8-3 in the third, the Gators scored at least three runs in each of the last four innings. They scored seven times in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good.
The last five runs in the fourth-inning rally came with two outs. Minor hit a two-run double and scored on Allan Allen’s single, and then Allen scored on a double by Mickell Jones to make it 14-8.
Minor walked and scored on another single by Allen in the fifth inning as Vicksburg added four more runs to end the game.
Allen finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Ashton Harris tripled, drove in two runs and scored two more; Nick Carson had three hits; and Abel Gonzalez scored four runs. All nine players in Vicksburg’s lineup reached base and scored at least one run.
Jones started on the mound and was roughed up for eight runs in two-plus innings. Kaleb Doss relieved him in the third, got out of a jam, and wound up throwing three scoreless innings. He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out two.
Doss also went 2-for-3 with two runs scored at the plate. Jones was 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and one run scored.
Vicksburg will play again March 18, in its MHSAA Region 2-6A opener at Ridgeland.
