PHILADELPHIA, Miss. — The Howell and Gillom trophies are back in familiar hands.

Mississippi State’s Josh Hubbard won the Howell Trophy, given to the top men’s college basketball player in Mississippi, for the second year in a row at a ceremony Monday.

Madison Scott, meanwhile, won the Gillom Trophy as the state’s top women’s player. She’s the fourth Ole Miss player in five years to earn the award.

Hubbard brought the Howell Trophy back to Starkville for the fourth year in a row, and the seventh time in eight years.

On Monday the sophomore guard was also named a second-team All-Southeastern Conference selection for the second year in a row. He joined Erick Dampier as the only Mississippi State players to earn All-SEC honors as both a freshman and sophomore, and is quickly moving into the ranks of Bulldog basketball legends.

Hubbard has scored 1,164 career points, which is the third highest total in State history through 66 games behind Bailey Howell — the Howell trophy’s namesake — and Jerry Jenkins. Hubbard has reached double figures in 60 of 66 games, and has a program-record 42 consecutive games with at least one 3-pointer.

Hubbard is averaging 18.3 points per game heading into Mississippi State’s (20-11) SEC Tournament opener against LSU (14-17) on Wednesday.

Scott was also named to the All-SEC second team after averaging 11.9 points and 3.8 assists per game. She recently eclipsed the 1,600-point and 1,000-rebound thresholds to become only the fourth Ole Miss women’s player to reach both of those marks.

Scott is also the most experienced player in Ole Miss history, competing in 151 contests and counting in her five seasons in Oxford. She has led the Rebels to a 20-10 record this season, which has them in line to host an NCAA Tournament regional.

The women’s NCAA Tournament brackets will be announced Sunday, March 16, at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
