Showers and thunderstorms, some severe, are in the forecast for Warren County Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Jackson.
Warren County Emergency Management Agency Director John Elfer said the threat will begin in the morning and last through most of the day before clearing out of the area around dusk.
“The worst of it should start around 7 or 8 a.m.,” Elfer said. “It will hang around until 4 or 5 p.m., but should be completely out of the area by 7 p.m. But this is not a squall line. It’s going to be an all-day thing for the whole state.”
Elfer said the expected thunderstorms will likely produce more wind than rain, adding there are real chances for tornadoes to develop.
“What’s going to happen is super cell thunderstorms are going to spin up and produce a tornado,” he said. “The farther east you go, the worse it’s gonna be.”
Elfer said EMA anticipates downed trees and power lines as a result of the storms, but added local first responders and officials have prepared for that possibility.
“I think we are as ready as you can get for it. But if people haven’t made their shelter plans, they need to be doing that. If you don’t have to travel, don’t. But if you are on the road and the weather gets bad, try to pull over at a service station. The last place you want to be is in a ditch, but if that’s all you’ve got, it’s all you’ve got.”
Elfer also cautioned anyone traveling by plane along the east coast that delays will be likely through Monday.
“People that are going to travel, they need to check with their airlines,” he said. “It may be nice when you fly out, but they will have problems on the east coast and up into New England through Monday morning.”
