In a rare occurrence, Mississippi’s Southeastern Conference men’s basketball teams are both dancing in March.
Ole Miss and Mississippi State both received at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament when the brackets were announced Sunday. It’s only the third time both teams have made the tournament in the same season. The others were in 2002 and 2019.
Ole Miss (22-11) will make its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2019. It is the No. 6 seed in the South bracket, and will play Friday in Milwaukee against the winner of a First Four game between San Diego State (21-9) and North Carolina (22-13).
San Diego State and North Carolina play Tuesday in Dayton, Ohio. The winner will be an 11-seed in the main 64-team bracket.

The winner of the first-round game advances to face either Iowa State (24-9) or Lipscomb (25-9).
Mississippi State (21-12) got a tougher draw as the No. 8 seed in the East Region. It’ll also open Friday, in Raleigh, N.C., against No. 9 seed Baylor (19-14).
Barring a massive upset, the winner of that game will get No. 1 seed Duke (31-3) on its home turf in the second round. The Blue Devils won their 28th Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championship, and are not expected to get much resistance from either American or Mount St. Mary’s — who meet in a First Four game on Wednesday — in round one.
Mississippi State is in the NCAA Tournament for the third year in a row under head coach Chris Jans. It has not won in the tournament in five trips since 2008, and hasn’t been past the second round since reaching the Final Four in 1996.
Ole Miss and Mississippi State were among a record 14 SEC teams selected to the 68-team NCAA Tournament field. The list includes two No. 1 and two No. 2 seeds.
Auburn (28-5) is the No. 1 seed in the South Region, as well as the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament. Florida (30-4) beat Tennessee 86-77 to win the SEC tournament championship on Sunday and got the No. 1 in the West Region. Tennessee (Midwest) and Alabama (East) are No. 2 seeds.
The glut of SEC teams in the bracket set up several potential SEC vs. SEC match-ups in the second round, which are rare. The NCAA Tournament selection committee tries to avoid having teams from the same conference play each other on the first weekend, but with 14 SEC teams and 16 pods in the tournament, it was unavoidable this time.
Alabama could face No. 10 Vanderbilt; Florida is in line to play No. 9 Oklahoma; and Kentucky, the No. 3 seed in the Midwest, could play Texas.
Texas was paired against Xavier in a First Four game on Wednesday. The winner moves on to play Illinois in the first round.
The other SEC teams to receive bids were Texas A&M, Missouri, Arkansas and Georgia. The only SEC teams not selected were LSU and South Carolina, which both had losing records.
