During its regular meeting Monday, the Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen (BOMA) approved the latest list of derelict properties on the Community Development Agenda.
Community Development Director Jeff Richardson presented the latest list, which included properties that pose a risk to the community based on the need for cleanup, demolishing of unsafe structures or other maintenance work.
Monday’s list included:
- 416 Farmer St.; property cleanup and vehicle removal; complied with the exception of one vehicle still in need of removal;
- 1705 Grove St.; demolition, property cleanup and vehicle removal; not complied;
- 1702 Jackson St.; demolition; not complied;
- 1706 Jackson St.; property cleanup; not complied;
- 1708 Jackson St.; property cleanup; not complied;
- 1412 Martin Luther King Blvd.; demolition, property cleanup and vehicle removal; not complied;
- 1004 Fifth North St.; property cleanup; vehicle removal; demolition; not complied;
- 1107 Fourth North St.; property cleanup; vehicle removal; demolition; not complied.
Appearing at Monday’s meeting on behalf of the properties at 1004 Fifth North St. and 1107 Fourth North St. was property owner Eugene Houston, who was granted an extension until Friday, March 28, to complete a privacy fence around the properties not in compliance.
City ordinances require property owners to keep their properties cut and clear of debris and their homes repaired. A violation results in a letter from the city ordering the property owner to clean the property or demolish the dilapidated home.
Under city ordinance and state law, the city may go in and cut and clean property or hire a private contractor to clean property determined to be a threat to public health and safety, and place a tax lien on the property.
