The Vicksburg Police Department (VPD) submitted crime statistics for February during the Monday meeting of the Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen (BOMA), and numbers for the second month of 2025 show drastic drops in crime almost across the board.
In February, VPD reported 3,186 logged calls; 797 reports; 194 arrests; 205 warrants issued; 230 citations issued; 14 warnings issued; and nine instances of DUI.
February’s numbers include:
- The second consecutive month without a murder or manslaughter;
- One recorded charge of rape, the same number reported in January;
- No charges for robbery, down from one in January;
- Four charges for aggravated assault, a 64% drop from 11 in January;
- No instances of business burglaries, down from four in January;
- Five reported auto burglaries, a 75% drop from 20 reported in January (including one incident involving a secured vehicle, down from 11 in January, and four involving unsecured vehicles, down from nine in January);
- One instance of auto theft, down 75% from four reported in January;
- Domestic violence incidents remained the same, with 22 reports in both January and February.
- No instances of carjackings or kidnappings were reported in January or February.
Vicksburg Chief of Police Penny Jones said February’s stats show the fruits of VPD’s labor, but added there is still more to do to keep crime on a consistent, downward trajectory.
“Crime is a reality in every community, and Vicksburg is no exception; however, the notion that crime is out of control is simply not true,” Jones said. “Our latest statistics show a reduction in crime for January and February, which is a direct result of the hard work and dedication of our officers, as well as the strong partnership we have with the community. While incidents will happen, our department remains committed to swift action. When crimes occur, we make the arrests. Public safety is our top priority, and we will continue working every day to keep Vicksburg safe. We appreciate the community’s support and encourage everyone to stay engaged in making our city a better place for all.”
The crime statistics were unanimously approved Monday by BOMA.
