Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs Jr. this week announced the official kickoff of his re-election campaign, set to take place Thursday at Delia’s Park, located at 2502 Halls Ferry Road. The event will be held from 3:30 until 6:30 p.m. and is open to the public.
“For Mayor Flaggs, Delia’s Park is more than just a location,” Flaggs’ office said in a statement announcing the event. “It’s where his dream to lead the City of Vicksburg first took root. As a young student in the ninth or tenth grade, he stood under the same tree where he now begins every campaign. It was there that Ms. Delia, the park’s namesake, told him she believed he could one day be mayor. Her encouragement planted a seed of hope and ambition that has guided his life in public service.”
Flaggs himself said the tree is a source of inspiration for him.
“I always start my campaign under that tree in (Marcus) Bottom because it reminds me of where it all began,” he said. “Ms. Delia’s belief in me made a difference, and I carry that with me every day as I serve the people of Vicksburg.”
Flaggs added that he is intentionally kicking off his campaign on March 20 because it is also his birthday.
“I’ve made it a tradition to start each new campaign on my birthday because there’s no greater gift than the opportunity to continue serving this city,” he said. “Every year, it reminds me how far we’ve come and how much more we can accomplish together.”
The campaign kickoff will feature music, refreshments, and an opportunity for residents to hear directly from Flaggs about his vision for the future of Vicksburg. Families, friends, and supporters are invited to attend the kickoff, Flaggs said.
