- Vicksburg Police Department is investigating a shooting Thursday afternoon on Adams Street.
The discovery of two people dead inside a Vicksburg residence Monday has led the Vicksburg Police Department (VPD) to rule the scene a murder-suicide, Chief of Police Penny Jones said Thursday.
“On Monday, March 17, 2025, at approximately 12:56 p.m., the Vicksburg Police Department responded to the 1400 block of Division Street regarding a death investigation,” Jones said. “Upon arrival, officers and the Vicksburg Fire Department gained entry into the residence, where they discovered two deceased individuals, later identified as 75-year-old Jack Greene Jr., a white male, and 76-year-old Kathleen Greene, a white female.”
Jones said, while officers have made the determination the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide, VPD continues working through the process of investigation appropriate for scenes such as Monday’s.
“This matter was treated as a death investigation until family members were notified and further investigation and evidence were gathered,” she said. “Out of respect for the families involved, no official statement was released from the Vicksburg Police Department until the appropriate notifications could be made. We ask for respect and privacy for the family as they process the sudden loss of their loved ones.”
Jones said it is important that information related to such cases is released at the appropriate times during the investigation in order to ensure all details are factual and up to date.
“While we understand the media’s role in informing the public, it is important that investigations are handled with care and accuracy,” she said. “Premature reporting of unverified details can be misleading and distressing to loved ones. Our department remains committed to providing timely and factual information in a professional manner.”
Jones also said the incident was contained to the home and at no point posed a larger threat to the community.
“We assure the citizens of Vicksburg that this was an isolated incident and posed no threat to public safety. We appreciate the community’s trust as we continue to serve with integrity.”
