LORMAN — Landon Bussie is leaving the Reservation for the Windy City.
Alcorn State’s men’s basketball coach ended a successful five-year run by resigning on Thursday, by announcing he has been hired as the head coach at Chicago State.
Bussie had a 66-82 record with Alcorn that included back-to-back Southwestern Athletic Conference regular-season championships in 2022 and 2023. The Braves lost in the conference tournament both years.
Alcorn has not played in the NCAA Tournament since 2002, although it did play in the NIT in 2022 and 2023.
Although Bussie did not have a winning record at Alcorn, the team’s non-conference schedule was often a brutal slog that did not include many home games. The Braves played five power conference teams this season, plus five more from the American and Mountain West Conferences — all on the road.
Alcorn was 11-20 overall, 11-7 in the SWAC, and finished sixth in the league standings this season.
“As I reflect on the past five years, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible journey we have shared,” Bussie wrote on X, in a post announcing his move. “Serving as the head men’s basketball coach at Alcorn State has been an honor and a privilege, and I want to take a moment to express my deepest appreciation.”

Before his time at Alcorn, the 37-year-old Bussie spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Prairie View A&M, helping guide the Panthers to two SWAC regular-season championships and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2019.
He also spent several seasons as an assistant at Xavier University in New Orleans, and with Prairie View’s women’s team before switching to the men’s program.
At Chicago State, Bussie will replace Scott Spinelli who went 4-28 in his only season. Chicago State, which plays in the Northeast Conference, has not had a winning record since the 2008-09 season. That was its only winning season since 1986.
In a statement, Alcorn State athletic director E. D’Wayne Robinson said the university will begin searching for its next coach immediately.
“Coach Bussie informed me of his decision to accept the head coaching position at Chicago State University,” Robinson said. “We are incredibly grateful for his contributions to our basketball program. His leadership and dedication have elevated our program, and his impact will be felt for years to come. We appreciate all that he has done for Alcorn State, and we wish him continued success in this next chapter of his coaching career.”
