Warren Central boys, girls zoom to team titles at Canton Speed City Meet

Warren Central’s track and field teams felt the need for victory at the Canton Speed City Meet.

The Vikings and Lady Vikes combined to win 19 of the 36 events on the card, as well as both team championships at the eight-team meet Monday at Canton High School.

Warren Central’s boys’ team had six individual event winners, five more second-place finishes, and one relay victory to rack up 229 points and an easy team title. Canton finished a distant second, with 146 points, Cleveland Central was third with 112.5, and Vicksburg fourth with 63.5.

Dwight Palmer led the way with four sprint victories in the 100 meters (10.82 seconds), 200 meters (22.03), and 400 meters (50.93). He also teamed with Mike Hall, Landon Green and Chester Savage to win the 4×200 meter relay in 1:31.53.

Savage got two individual victories of his own, in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles events. He won the 110 hurdles in 15.86 seconds and the 300 in 41.56.

The Vikings also swept the distance events, as Will Bates won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters and Rohan Caples the 800. Caples edged out Cleveland Central’s Chris Evans by three seconds to win in 2:12.40. Bates enjoyed a 26-second margin of victory in the 3,200, but only beat Canton’s JeKarrian Carson by three-tenths of a second in the 1,600.

Warren Central’s other two wins came in the field events. Rickey Neal Jr. won the triple jump with a leap of 43 feet, 5 inches, and finished second in the long jump with a mark of 21-5.

Senior thrower Gavin Davenport won the shot put with a mark of 44-8 and was second in the discus at 124-6.

Vicksburg High’s best finishes were a second in the 4×100 meter relay and four third-place efforts from Detreich Stewart in the 100 meters, Maurice Taylor in the 200, Jayden Woods in the discus and Marquise Knight in the long jump.

In the girls’ meet, Warren Central totaled 222 points to nearly double up Cleveland Central. Cleveland Central finished second, with 117.5 points, and Vicksburg High was third with 116.

Madison Ward and Adria Burrell were both multiple winners. Ward won the 100 meter hurdles in 16.77 seconds and the long jump with a mark of 16 feet, 11.5 inches.

Burrell won 400 meters in 1:02.34, and joined Ka’ryn Henderson, Za’Mya Malone and Arielle Ward on the winning 4×100 and 4×200 meter relays.

Burrell also finished second in both the 100 and 200 meters. She was edged out by Vicksburg’s Amiya Hall in both events. Hall won the 100 meters in 12.18 seconds and Burrell was second in 12.22. In the 200 meters, Hall had a winning time of 25.50 seconds and Burrell came in second in 25.77.

Other winners for Warren Central were Mere Smith in the 300 meter hurdles (51.79 seconds); Kayla Parson in the 800 meters (2:50.39); Cora Lindsay in the 1,600 meters (6:27.06); and Arrionna Jenkins in the shot put (33 feet, 5 inches).

In addition to Hall, Vicksburg had two winners — Kennedy Williams in the discus, with a mark of 96 feet, 5 inches; and Zion Knox in the high jump and triple jump.

Knox won the high jump with a height of 5 feet even and the triple jump with a leap of 36-8. Knox’s teammate McKenzy Edmond finished second in the high jump at 4-8.
