Tallulah Academy’s Tripp Gayle is the Athlete of the Week

Tripp Gayle led Tallulah Academy’s baseball team to a lopsided win last week, then got another in The Vicksburg Post’s Athlete of the Week contest.

Gayle received 2,243 of the 4,069 votes cast in an online poll of The Post’s readers to earn this week’s award.

Warren Central baseball player Hayes Loper finished second, with 809 votes. St. Aloysius tennis player Carrie Wood was third, with 758 votes, and Vicksburg High softball player Shandrea Lockridge was fourth with 506.

Gayle, a junior with Tallulah Academy’s baseball team, had eight strikeouts and allowed one run in four innings pitched in a 22-1 win over Tensas Academy on March 21. He also was 2-for-5 with three RBIs in two games.

For the season, he is batting .514 with eight doubles, one home run, 17 RBIs and 11 runs scored in 15 games for the Trojans (9-6). On the mound, he has a 2-0 record and 20 strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings pitched.
