SPOKANE, Wash. — Once it got pushed and backed into a corner, UCLA asserted its dominance as one of the juggernauts of women’s college basketball.
After going into halftime leading by only one point, the top-seeded Bruins opened the second half with an 8-0 run and quickly pulled away from No. 5 seed Ole Miss, going on to win 76-62 in the NCAA Women’s Tournament’s Sweet 16 round on Friday.
Lauren Betts finished with 31 points and 10 rebounds for UCLA, and Kiki Rice had 13 points and seven assists.
Tameiya Sadler led Ole Miss Miss (22-11) with 14 points. Kennedy Todd-Williams finished with 13 points and nine rebounds, and KK Deans also scored 13 points off the bench.
UCLA (33-2) advanced to face LSU (31-5) in the Spokane 1 Regional final Sunday at 2 p.m. on ABC. No. 3 seed LSU defeated No. 2 North Carolina State 80-73 earlier Friday.
Ole Miss was in the NCAA Tournament’s Round of 16 for the second time in three seasons and hung tough for a while. It was held scoreless for the first four minutes of the game and never led, but rallied to pull within 30-29 at halftime. A layup by Deans capped a 10-3 burst to end the second quarter.
Londynn Jones and Rice each made a 3-pointer during a quick 8-0 run coming out of the halftime break, however, and UCLA was not really threatened again. After Jones hit another 3-pointer with 6:07 left in the third quarter to make it 45-33, the Bruins’ lead only dipped back into single digits for a single possession late in the period. They maintained a lead of between 12 and 19 points throughout the fourth quarter.
