Warren Central’s tennis team added the last two jewels to its Region 2-6A crown on Thursday.
Brady Taylor and Gray Lampkin won the boys doubles championship, and Avery Hern and Amelia King the girls doubles title when the MHSAA Region 2-6A tournament concluded Thursday at Halls Ferry Park.
Both doubles pairs beat their Warren Central teammates in three-set thrillers in the championship matches. Taylor and Lampkin beat Sam Harris and Luke Bond 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8), while Hern and King defeated Sydney Sullivan and Lilli Feibelman 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8).
All four doubles teams, plus three other Warren Central players advanced to the Class 6A individual tournament that will be played April 14 in Oxford.
The rest of the region tournament was played Wednesday in Madison. Once the doubles brackets whittled down to all-Warren Central finals late that night, the last two matches were pushed to Thursday in Vicksburg.
Warren Central’s Ivan Ozherelev won the boys singles championship, and Charles Harris and Charles Harris and Ellie Tennison won twice to take the mixed doubles title.
Vicksburg’s Kennedy Mullins won the girls’ singles title and was the only player from her team to advance to the state tournament.
Warren Central also won the Region 2-6A team championship and will host Olive Branch Tuesday, April 1, at 1:30 p.m. in a first-round match in the Class 6A playoffs. The MHSAA runs separate brackets for the team and individual playoffs.
