Peyton Malone has been a volunteer firefighter for the Warren County Fire Service for about four-and-a-half years. During that time, he has learned the ropes as a first responder.
“I’ve always been interested in the public service field. Fire interests me a lot,” Malone said. “I found a way to get in and got my foot in the door, and I haven’t looked back since. (These are) great people to work around.”
What Malone likes about the job is the variety of services that he provides and the people he gets to help.
“It’s never really the same old stuff. Obviously it’s always dealing (with) fire, medical, wrecks, stuff like that. But you meet different people all the time. You meet people in need of services, and we get to provide that,” Malone said. “We get to give them a little comfort at the end of the night when they go to sleep; that we could either potentially save their life or save their residence from burning down. That just brings comfort to me. Some people will never forget you for stuff like that.”
Malone said that it’s touching to have people remember him years after showing up to a call.
“You’ll have people see you in public and always can remember three, four years, go to 10 years back, ‘Oh, I remember this time you showed up to my house and done this,’” he said.
He also recommends being a volunteer firefighter to those that might be interested.
“Anybody that’s got a need to want to serve in the fire service and wants to volunteer their time, find any Warren County firefighter and get set up with an application for the Warren County Fire Service,” Malone said. “I’ll be glad to help.”
