The sophomore Blackmore totaled 810 pounds — 325 in the squat, 160 in the bench press and 325 in the deadlift — to beat Center Hill’s Morgan Anderson by 20 pounds.

“I’ve just been waiting for it. I’ve been working hard — very hard — and I was surprised,” Blackmore said. “I was scared, because I’ve been competing with this girl since I started. I was just hoping I got it and she didn’t.”

Blackmore and Anderson both had lifted 800 pounds at the North State meet. Blackmore bested Anderson by 40 pounds in the bench press, which forced Anderson to go for broke in the deadlift. The Center Hill lifter set a mark of 350 pounds on her first lift, but scratched on her second attempt at 410 and was out of chances at that point.

“She tried to tie us. She tried to go 410 and couldn’t lift it up. That’s when I knew I had it. I was nervous,” Blackmore said.

Ross, meanwhile, entered with a top total that was 100 pounds more than his closest competition and held serve. The junior totaled 1,430 pounds to beat Saltillo’s KJ Robins by 60 pounds. Lake Cormorant’s Taruick Boyd II finished third, at 1,320 pounds.

Ross squatted 530 pounds, benched 300 and deadlifted 600. His bench press total was slightly lower than his North State mark of 315 pounds, but he matched his deadlift and improved his squat by 10 pounds.

Vicksburg High had two lifters in the Class 6A boys’ meet. Junior Leandrew Drake finished second in the 181-pound weight class, with a total of 1,315 pounds, and junior Karter Thomas was fourth in the 308-pound division with a total of 1,375 pounds.

Drake squatted 500 pounds, benched 285, and deadlifted 530. Pearl River Central’s Garrett Ouder won the 181-pound state title with a total weight of 1,510 pounds. Ouder squatted 600 pounds, matched Drake’s 285-pound mark on the bench, and deadlifted 600.

Thomas put up 575 in the squat, 290 on the bench, and 500 in the deadlift. Lake Cormorant’s Tyler Wallace won the 308-pound title with a total of 1,90 pounds.

Lake Cormorant won the boys’ team championship with 38 points and Grenada was second with 23. Vicksburg and Warren Central had seven points each to tie for 11th place, but neither had enough lifters competing to contend for the team title.

Also competing in the girls’ meet was Warren Central’s Mariah Burnett. The senior finished fourth in the 242-plus division by squattng 335 pounds, benching 150 and deadlifting 275 for a total of 760 pounds. Her bench press total was the best among the six lifters in her weight class.

Burnett and Blackmore were the only Warren County lifters in the girls’ meet. Blackmore’s state championship gave Vicksburg seven points and an eighth-place finish out of 18 teams. Lake Cormorant won the Class 6A team title with 61 points — it won championships in seven of the 12 weight classes — and Center Hill was a distant second with 37 points.
