Baseball Roundup: PCA, Vicksburg earn key district wins

Published 9:31 am Wednesday, April 2, 2025

Porter’s Chapel Academy hasn’t won a lot of baseball games this season, but it’s winning some of the ones that count.

The Eagles scored two runs on an error in the bottom of the sixth inning, and hung on to beat Franklin Academy 6-4 on Tuesday.

PCA has only won three games this season, but two of them have been against MAIS District 4-3A opponents. It is in third place and on track to earn a playoff berth. It will play Franklin again Thursday at 6 p.m. in Winnsboro, La., and then face first-place Prairie View in a home-and-home series April 8 and 10.

Tuesday’s victory was a thriller. The teams traded runs through the third, fourth and fifth innings. PCA’s Cameron Potter tripled and scored on an error in the bottom of the fifth to tie it 4-4, and after an uneventful top of the sixth the Eagles stitched together their winning rally.

A walk, hit batter and single by Potter loaded the bases with one out. Evan Gordon grounded back to the pitcher, who got the lead runner at home. The throw to first for an attempted double play went wild, however, and two runs scored to give PCA a 6-4 lead.

Franklin got its leadoff runner on in the seventh, but he was erased on a double play and relief pitcher Coltin Hancock got a ground out to end the game and earn a save.

Chad Fuson pitched 6 2/3 innings for PCA (3-16, 2-2 District 4-3A). He allowed four hits and two walks, four unearned runs, and had 11 strikeouts. He was pulled with two outs in the seventh because he was at the mandated pitch limit.

Potter led the Eagles at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a triple and three runs scored.

Vicksburg 12, Columbus 2
Kobe Cartwright went 2-for-4 with three RBis and two runs scored, and Allan Allen had an outstanding game on the mound as Vicksburg High earned a key win over MHSAA Region 2-6A rival Columbus.

Seven West reached base three times and scored twice for the Gators, and Kaleb Doss was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. Jacobie Simpson, Peyton Calvin, Nick Carson and Mickell Jones also had one RBI each.

Allen had seven strikeouts in a seven-inning complete game. He allowed four hits and two walks, and two runs.

This week’s two-game series between Vicksburg (6-13, 1-2 Region 2-6A) and Columbus (6-13, 0-5) is essentially an elimination series for one of the four playoff berths from Region 2-6A. The teams will play again at VHS’ Showers Field Friday at 7 p.m.

The Gators will also play Yazoo County Thursday at 7 p.m., at Trustmark Park in Pearl.

Warren Central 2, Germantown 0
Justin Greer, Nathaniel Moore and Tristan Jamison combined on a three-hit shutout to lead Warren Central (11-8) past Germantown (10-11) for its eighth consecutive victory on Tuesday.

Greer started and pitched three innings, then Moore and Jamison followed with two innings of relief each. They did not walk a batter and combined for seven strikeouts.

Jamison also singled and scored a run in the second inning, when the Vikings got both of their runs. Jamison’s hit and a misplayed bunt that allowed Trace Hood to reach base set up a two-run double by Jacob Kealhofer.
Warren Central and Germantown combined for only seven hits.

Warren Central will host Class 7A power Northwest Rankin Saturday at 4 p.m.

Tallulah Academy 12, Christ Covenant 1
J.T. McDaniel went 2-for-3 with a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored to lead Tallulah Academy (10-8) to a win over Christ Covenant on Tuesday. McDaniel hit a two-run home run in the third inning.

Tallulah scored seven runs in the fourth inning on only one hit. Kennedy Collins led off with a single, and then the Trojans had seven walks and two hit batters to get the rest of the job done.

Luke Moberley reached base three times and scored twice for the Trojans, and Tripp Gayle doubled and scored two runs.

Charlie Vining had two RBIs while also pitching a four-inning complete game. He allowed two hits and two walks, and had one strikeout.

Tallulah Academy will host River Oaks Thursday at 6 p.m.

Briarfield 12, Claiborne Academy 0
Davis Holt went 2-for-2 with one RBI and two runs scored, and pitched a five-inning one-hitter to lead Briarfield Academy (11-5, 3-0 MAIS District 4-2A) past Claiborne Academy.

Holt walked two batters and had 10 strikeouts in his five innings pitched.

Jackson Thornton singled, walked twice and had two RBIs for the Rebels, while Jake Thornton reached base three times and scored twice. Trecin Baker also scored three runs.
