Baseball Roundup: PCA can’t get past Franklin; Gators fall in Trustmark game; Tallulah wins

Porter’s Chapel Academy had plenty of opportunities to sweep Franklin Academy, but couldn’t quite take advantage of them.

The Eagles left runners on base in every inning except one, and lost 6-5 to Franklin in the second half of their MAIS District 4-3A baseball series on Thursday.

PCA only had one hit, a double by Clayton McClure in the sixth inning. It used five walks, six hit batters and four errors by Franklin to generate its offense.

Unfortunately, PCA also committed five errors that led to six unearned runs. Franklin scored in each of the first four innings, and two errors in the fourth allowed the Cougars to take a 6-4 lead.

An RBI ground out by PCA’s Cameron Potter in the sixth cut it to 6-5. but the tying run was stranded at third base and two more runners were left on base in the seventh.

Franklin pitcher Jesse Killingsworth had nine strikeouts in seven innings. He also hit an RBI single, walked three times and scored two runs.

PCA pitcher Evan Gordon threw five innings and had seven strikeouts. He allowed five hits and walked three batters.

PCA (3-16, 2-3 District 4-3A) beat Franklin 6-4 in the first game of the series, but couldn’t get the sweep. It’ll host first-place Prairie View Academy Tuesday at 6 p.m., and then go to Prairie View on April 10.

Yazoo County 23, Vicksburg 4
Gabe Shaffer went 3-for-3 with a double, five RBIs and three runs scored, and Yazoo County (12-7) rode a huge first inning to a win over Vicksburg High (6-13) Thursday at Trustmark Park.

Thirteen of Yazoo County’s first 14 batters reached base as it scored 13 runs in the top of the first. Vicksburg scored three runs in the bottom of the first and another in the second but couldn’t keep up with the Panthers.

Mickell Jones doubled and had an RBI on a bases-loaded walk for the Gators. Mincer Minor had one hit and scored a run, and Nick Carson walked twice and scored twice.

Vicksburg will host Columbus Friday at 7 p.m. in a key game in the MHSAA Region 2-6A playoff race, and then is scheduled to host Meridian Saturday at 3 p.m.

Tallulah Academy 9, River Oaks 2
J.T. McDaniel homered and turned in a dominant pitching performance to lead Tallulah Academy (11-8) past River Oaks on Thursday.

McDaniel pitched six innings, allowed one unearned run, and had 13 strikeouts while combining with Luke Moberley on a no-hitter. Moberley pitched the seventh inning and had two strikeouts. The two pitchers combined for five walks.

Moberley also was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs at the plate. Tripp Gayle was 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, and Caleb Grady drove in two runs. Charlie Vining had two hits, walked twice, drove in one run and scored two.
