Porter’s Chapel Academy’s tennis team scratched out a win and an opportunity to play for the MAIS District 4-3A championship.
The Eagles won three of the four singles points, and added two more thanks to forfeits to beat Franklin Academy 5-4 at Halls Ferry Park on Friday.
The victory set up a winner-take-all showdown with St. Augustine on Monday at 3:30 p.m. at Halls Ferry Park, with the winner claiming the regular-season district title. PCA (5-3, 4-0 District 4-3A), St. Augustine, Franklin Academy, Prairie View Academy and Hillcrest Christian will also play a district tournament April 16 in Madison.
PCA earned three forfeit victories in both boys’ doubles matches and No. 2 boys’ singles to give it a big leg up in the match against Franklin. Siblings Hadleigh and Henry Slayton got the rest of the job done by winning their singles matches in straight sets.
Hadleigh Slayton beat Mattie Montgomery 6-1, 6-0 in No. 1 girls’ singles, and Henry Slayton won 6-1, 6-0 against Chandler Olivier in No. 1 boys’ singles.
Franklin Academy won the No. 2 girls’ singles point, mixed doubles, and both girls’ doubles matches.
