Warren Central sprinters shine at Madison Central meet

Warren Central’s best sprinters ran to the front of the field and up the steps of the awards podium.
Senior Adria Burrell and junior Dwight Palmer combined to finish first or second in five of the six sprint races and won three of them at the MC Jaguar Invite Friday at Madison Central High School.
Burrell won the girls’ 100 and 200 meters with times of 12.46 and 24.96 seconds, respectively. She has won the 100 and 200 at three of Warren Central’s five meets this season. She also finished fourth in the 400 meters on Friday.
Palmer is undefeated in five starts in the 200 meters. He clocked a time of 22.23 seconds to beat Germantown’s Ken Travis by three-tenths of a second and keep his streak intact.
Palmer also added second-place finishes in the 100 and 400 meters, with times of 10.96 and 49.10 seconds, respectively.
The performances of Burrell and Palmer were the biggest highlights of a solid day for Warren County’s athletes against a strong field that included four Class 7A track powers.
Warren Central’s Rickey Neal Jr. won the boys’ long jump with a mark of 22 feet, 2 inches, and was second in the triple jump at 44-3. Chester Savage finished second in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 40.14 seconds that was just .08 seconds behind winner Carter Parks of Clinton.
Vicksburg High’s Jayden Woods had a fourth-place finish in the discus with a throw of 123 feet, 4 inches.
Warren Central totaled 77.5 points to finish fifth in the team standings and Vicksburg was sixth with 20. Clinton won the boys’ team title with 182.5 points.
On the girls’ side, Arrionna Jenkins won the shot put with a throw of 33-11, and was second in the discus with a throw of 108-6 to lead Warren Central to a third-place team finish.
Madison Ward was second in the triple jump with a leap of 37-6, and third in the long jump at 16 feet, 9.5 inches.
Vicksburg High freshman Zion Knox was a double winner, with victories in the long jump and triple jump. She jumped 18 feet, 4 inches in the long jump, and 39-6.5 in the triple jump.
Knox also tied with teammate Makenzy Edmond for third place in the high jump, with a height of 4-10.
Amiya Hall added two more podium finishes for the Missy Gators in the 100 and 200 meters. She had a time of 12.77 seconds in the 100 and 25.07 in the 200 to place third in both events.
The Lady Vikes scored 92 points to finish behind Clinton (220) and Pearl (121). Vicksburg High was fourth, with 86 points. A total of 11 teams competed.
