Voting is under way for The Vicksburg Post’s Athlete of the Week contest.

This week’s nominees are Henry Slayton (Porter’s Chapel tennis); and track athletes Adria Burrell (Warren Central), Samantha Edwards (St. Aloysius) and Zion Knox (Vicksburg).

Voting is open until midnight Tuesday, and you can vote as many times as you want until the deadline.

Henry Slayton, a senior with Porter’s Chapel Academy’s tennis team, only dropped one game while winning two No. 1 boys singles matches against Prairie View and Franklin Academy. PCA has a 4-0 team record in MAIS District 4-3A, and Slayton is also undefeated in singles matches this season.

Adria Burrell, a senior sprinter with Warren Central’s girls’ track and field team, won the 100 and 200 meters at the MC Jaguar Invite on April 4. Burrell won the 100 meters in 12.46 seconds, and the 200 in 24.96.

Samantha Edwards, a senior distance runner with St. Aloysius’ girls’ track and field team, swept the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters at the Centreville Academy Tiger Classic on April 3. Edwards is undefeated in all three events at four meets this season.

Zion Knox, a freshman with Vicksburg High’s girls’ track and field team, won the long jump and triple jump, and tied for third place in the high jump at the MC Jaguar Invite on April 4. Knox had marks of 18 feet, 4 inches in the long jump and 39-6.5 in the triple jump.

Voting is open until midnight Tuesday, and you can vote as many times as you want until the deadline. The winner will be announced Wednesday on vicksburgpost.com and featured in our Friday print edition.
