An excellent day of doubles carried St. Aloysius’ tennis team to the MAIS District 4-5A championship.
The Flashes won district titles in No. 1 boys and girls doubles, as well as mixed doubles, and squeaked past Cathedral and Adams County Christian School for the team championship.
St. Al totaled 10 points, Cathedral had nine and ACCS eight. Teams were awarded one point for every match won. In addition to its three championships, St. Al reached the finals in four other brackets.
Carrie Wood and Walker Moore only dropped one game in rolling to the mixed doubles title. They beat Cathedral 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and ACCS 6-1, 6-0 in the finals.
Michael Moore and Grant Gattle had a similarly easy time in No. 1 boys doubles. After advancing to the finals because of a forfeit by Copiah Academy, the Flashes duo beat ACCS 6-1, 6-1.
Olivia Larsen and Hendrix Eldridge had a tougher time in No. 1 girls doubles. They beat Copiah 6-4, 6-0 in the first round, then had to rally to beat Cathedrall 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 in a third-set tiebreaker to win it all.
Both girls singles players, Cristan Wood and Sarah Smith, advanced to the finals before losing in straight sets. The No. 2 girls doubles team of Julia Tuminello and Jane Matthews, and the No. 1 boys doubles team of Ryan Davidson and Caleb Stewart, also lost in the finals but still advanced to the state tournament.
