VPD has ‘persons of interest’ in Thursday shooting; says ‘shootout’ report inaccurate

Vicksburg Police Chief Penny Jones said a reported shootout Thursday afternoon between two vehicles was inaccurately reported and residents should have a clearer picture of the event, which has led to several juvenile “persons of interest.”

“We want to address misinformation being circulated,” Jones told The Post Thursday afternoon. “Reports that two vehicles were exchanging gunfire in broad daylight are false. There was only one suspect vehicle involved, and it was not a black SUV as previously mentioned by some sources.”

Jones said the shooting incident involved one vehicle, with occupants appearing to be firing at a specific person on Adams Street at approximately 12:30 p.m.

“Upon investigation, it was determined that a dark-colored, four-door sedan fired shots targeting a specific individual,” she said. “There was only one vehicle involved in this incident, and it was not a shootout between two vehicles as this was inaccurately reported. Officers have spoken with the victim who is a juvenile. We do have persons of interest, juveniles as well. The residence where the victim lives was struck by gunfire, but no other homes were hit, and no one was injured.”

Jones said the investigation remains active and officers are working to sort through gathered evidence.

“Evidence and video footage have been collected as part of our ongoing investigation,” she said. “We are actively pursuing leads and will provide updates as arrests are made or more information becomes available.”
