J.M. Fried was named chairman of the general committee for the Vicksburg Centennial celebration.

90 YEARS AGO: 1935

The City League baseball season opened in Vicksburg. • Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Gregory and Mr. and Mrs. George Anderson motored to Paducah, Kentucky. 

80 YEARS AGO: 1945

The Mississippi River reached 47 feet on the Vicksburg gauge. • Pvt. First Class Frances Lazarus, who was listed as missing in action in Germany, was reported safe. 

70 YEARS AGO: 1955

Bids were opened for the new 200-bed Mercy Hospital Street Memorial. • Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hainisee were visiting California. 

60 YEARS AGO: 1965

John Thomas Sherwin was named valedictorian of Tallulah High School. • Services were held for Mrs. Mollie Wilmore. 

50 YEARS AGO: 1975

The Mississippi River crested at 49.7 feet. • Karen Stewart, daughter of Mrs. G.M. Stewart, was crowned Miss St. Dominic School of Nursing. 

40 YEARS AGO: 1985

Katie Belle Ashley died. • Erica Marie Brewer celebrated her fifth birthday. 

30 YEARS AGO: 1995

Warren Central Junior High School student Eden Gipson was chosen to represent Mississippi at the RespecTeen National Youth Forum in D.C. 

20 YEARS AGO: 2005

The Civil War battlefield at Port Gibson was designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior.

10 YEARS AGO: 2015

Northside Baptist Church was preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary on April 19.
